Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are a safe and simple procedure done in the clinic office.
A small volume (20-60 cc) of a patient’s blood is drawn and mixed with an anticoagulant to prevent the sample from clotting while being processed. The sample is then placed in a centrifuge and double-spun to concentrate the platelets and important growth factors.
The final PRP sample (3-9 cc) is then injected into the target tissue or joint. Depending on where it is being injected, this may be done under ultrasound-guidance.
The entire procedure takes about 20-30 minutes.
